Research Blog #6 - Visual

 

The image I chose is of a woman being plagued by demons. She is surrounded by several demons and the image originally is one that is shown to put into picture mental illness. I chose this image because I wanted to show how similar the connotations and associations of possession and mental illness are. When speaking about people suffering from mental illness, many people often say that they are "battling their demons". This is very similar to how in possession, a person is thought to actually be possessed by a demon. I thought this image would show how similar yet different possession and mental illness are and how past associations of possessions still have an influence on modern depictions of mental illness.
